What do Ethereum ETFs mean for crypto?

Let's start with what an ETF is, for all of those unfamiliar...

--> What is an Exchange Traded Fund (ETF)?

An Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) is a type of investment fund and exchange-traded product, meaning it is traded on stock exchanges similar to regular stocks. ETFs are designed to track the performance of a specific index, sector, commodity, or other asset. For example, if you wanted to invest in the technology space because you think it is going to go up, but don't have the slightest idea of which stock to buy... one might consider buying an ETF. That said, here are a few notable choices covering some of the of highest performing technology ETF's to date (as of 06/22/24):

Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ):
Top Holdings-Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet (Google), and Facebook (Meta)

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK):
Top Holdings-Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Visa, and MasterCard

ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK):
Top Holdings-Tesla, Roku, CRISPR Therapeutics, Square (Block), and Teladoc Health.

The idea behind this, is that investing in an ETF rather than a single stock can be a safer choice for risk-averse investors due to its diversification, which reduces the impact of any single company's performance. ETFs offer lower volatility by holding a basket of securities, cost efficiency through lower expense ratios and transaction costs, and greater liquidity with the ability to trade throughout the day. Additionally, ETFs provide broad market exposure, consistent performance by tracking indices, and a wide variety of investment options, making them a versatile and lower-risk investment compared to individual stocks.

--> So what does this mean for crypto, and why would it be good for this space to receive ETF approval?

1. Legitimacy and Credibility...

If you're like me, you might be wondering - well all of this is great but what does any of this have to do with Cardano? After all, AdaHQ is a one stop shop for all things Cardano....

When I describe crypto to the average normie who knows nothing other than bitcoin is worth several thousand dollars. To make things easier to digest, Bitcoin is a simply a source of value where one can send and receive funds digitally within seconds (that is, before the Taproot upgrade came along). Ethereum in its most basic sense, does everything Bitcoin does except now it throws in the capability to develop applications and smart contracts on top of it. And Cardano? Well, Cardano does everything Ethereum and Bitcoin do, but faster, cheaper and in a more sustainable way - at the end of the day some would say it's Ethereum2.0 (;

Ethereum and Cardano are fundamentally different in several ways, including their underlying philosophies, technical architectures, and development approaches. Here are the 7 key differences:
